چکیده

In the last few years there has been an increasing interest in using traditional animal breeding techniques to improve important traits such as growth rate in freshwater crayfish. However, a major impediment to such programs is an inability to reliably identify individuals or family groups for long periods because of the non-retention of external tags through ecdysis. Visual implant Ž . Ž . elastomer VIE and visual alphanumeric VIalpha internal tags have proven useful in identifying finfish and amphibians. We evaluated the suitability of these two internal tags as a method to Ž . identify yabby Cherax destructor juveniles. Both tags proved useful in identifying juveniles Ž between 0.1 and 4.6 g, with the VIE having the higher retention rate of the two tags up to 92%, . as opposed to 79% for the VIalpha tag . Mortality, as a direct consequence of tagging juveniles with the VIE and VIalpha tags was 13% and 11%, respectively. The ability to reliably identify C. destructor juveniles will increase the efficiency of selective breeding programs for this species by allowing individuals and family groups to be pooled in growth experiments, thereby decreasing the impact of confounding environmental effects. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Susceptibility of the Australian freshwater crayfish Cherax destructor albidus to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV).

Cherax destructor occurs naturally and/or is farmed in all Australian mainland states and territories and is of major cultural, economical and conservation significance. The aim of this study was to determine susceptibility of the commercially important subspecies C. destructor albidus to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), a hazard to crustaceans and currently considered to be exotic to Australi...

Hardy exotics species in temperate zone: can “warm water” crayfish invaders establish regardless of low temperatures?

The spreading of new crayfish species poses a serious risk for freshwater ecosystems; because they are omnivores they influence more than one level in the trophic chain and they represent a significant part of the benthic biomass. Both the environmental change through global warming and the expansion of the pet trade increase the possibilities of their spreading. We investigated the potential o...

Retention of visible implant tags in small rockpool fishes

Retention and associated fish mortality of visible implant alphanumeric (VIA) and fluorescent elastomer tags was assessed in 2 Australian intertidal rockpool fishes, Girella elevata (Girellidae) and Bathygobius cocosensis (Gobiidae). Mean retention of VIA and elastomer tags after 90 d was 32 ± 20% and 77 ± 19%, respectively. After 90 d the fish mean mortality from VIA tags (20 ± 5%) was signifi...

Effects of enriched artemia on growth and survival of juvenile freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus Esch. 1823)

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of artemia enriched with lipid emulsions containing highly unsaturated fatty acids on growth and survival of juvenile freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus. Juvenile crayfish were fed artemia enriched with commercial emulsions (red pepper and olio ω3) and un-enriched artemia (control). The highest eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) level was ...
